What to expect

To explore the artistic dynamism following the 1917 Revolution, the exhibition on Russian avant-garde could not find a more perfect setting than the Centre Georges Pompidou. In this iconic building with its futuristic architecture, the pioneering spirit of Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich, and many others meets the genius of the venue in a retrospective that promises to be historic. One period, 1917-1922. One city, Vitebsk. One guiding thread, Marc Chagall. Well-known to the French public for his fresco on the ceiling of the Opéra Garnier, the Russian painter led the Vitebsk Art School in Belarus. At his invitation, the pioneers of the major movements of the 1920s followed as contributors. Constructivism by Lissitzky, Suprematism by Malevich, Neo-primitive by Goncharova—this exhibition, a century later, allows us to relive the major post-revolutionary artistic upheavals and dive into the extreme artistic vitality of that era.
